Firm Summary
I attended the business school at The Ohio State University and obtained my MBA Degree. I entered the work force employed as a business consultant, but I had aspirations of owning my own business. I attended law school and became an attorney so I could start my own business and advise others with their business-related legal matters. I believe that personal planning goes hand-in–hand with successful business transition planning. I have limited my practice to estate and business planning, which allows me to work with individuals and business owners to help them plan their personal estates to provide for their loved ones and also plan for the successful transition of their business interests.
With the birth of our second child, Erin, I was introduced into the world of being a parent of a child with special needs. As a result, I expanded the scope of my estate planning services to include special planning for families like mine. My wife and I actively participate in a number of special needs organizations related to our daughter’s activities. We also established the Erin Root Fund For Children at the Columbus Foundation to enable us to direct our charitable giving to organizations created to serve children with special needs.
I come from a family of educators. I was the only one from my family who did not become a teacher until I became employed by The Ohio State University in 2003 to teach Estate Planning to students who are pursuing a degree in Consumer & Family Financial Services. I retired from that role in 2019, but over time I have also served on the Finance Advisory Board to the Business School at Ohio University in Athens, and was on the Board of Trustees at Bridgeway Academy in Columbus, Ohio, which is a school for children with Autism and other disabilities.
