Vance E. Halvorson attended and graduated from Edina High School in 1963. Vance Halvorson attended the University of Minnesota, majoring in psychology with a minor in speech from 1963 to 1967 where Vance graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Vance attended the University of Denver Law School from 1967 until 1970 when he graduated with Juris Doctor Degree. While in law school Vance authored Case Comment Constitution Law 46 Den L.J. 482 (c1969) and was a note editor on the Denver Law Journal and received several foundation press awards. After law school from 1970 to 1971 Vance clerked for the Honorable Judge Jean S. Breitenstine of the United States Circuit Court for the 10th Judicial District. Vance served in the United States Army Reserves 1968 -1973 and attained the rank of staff sergeant.
LAW PRACTICE:
Vance E. Halvorson established his law practice in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in August of 1971 which continues to this date. Over the years Vance has gained a breath of experience in the civil law practice. Vance has been active in both the trial practice and appeals. Noteworthy successful reported appeals include Application of Bubb 610 P.2d 1342 (Colo. 1980) and the City of Steamboat Springs vs C.D. Johnson 252 P.3d 1142 (Colo.App. 2010). During the many years of Vance’s practice he has done construction law and litigation; condemnation, represented land owners and has done numerous cases of litigation concerning real estate boundary disputes, water law and landlord leasing and evictions. Vance has drafted many agreements, contracts and understandings concerning real estate, commercial law and business. Vance Halvorson has formed numerous business organizations including S & C Corporations, LLC’s, general and family partnerships.
Over the years (and with more emphasis recently) Vance has actively practiced in the probate courts, trust management and problem resolution associated therewith. Vance has prepared numerous estate plans and drafted numerous wills, trusts (including living trusts, disability trusts and insurance trusts), powers of attorney, HIPPA release’s and living wills, (see ask lawyer – Do I need a living will. Sometimes effective family business and estate planning involved the drafting of family limited partnerships, general partnerships or limited liability companies to effectively and economically transfer a family business from generation to generation and Vance has drafted and helped manage those businesses. Vance as a part of his probate practice has prepared and/or reviewed Estate 706 Tax Returns. Vance practices elder law advising clients concerning government benefits and programs. Vance has helped persons and groups create and manage 501c(3) companies and foundations. Vance has always approached the practice of law from a can do perspective and has always aggressively served the best interests of his clients.
OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES:
Vance is a former Trustee of the Colorado Lions Foundation and a former board member and vice president of the Routt County Foundation for Senior Citizens, Inc. Vance is also a prior member of the Colorado Judicial Review Panel of the 14rh Judicial District in Colorado.
Vance lives in Steamboat Springs with his wife Sharon and their dogs and enjoys swimming, gardening, fishing, camping and the great outdoors that the Yampa Valley offers.
