Shelley Thompson is a Shareholder at the 40-year law firm of Burns, Figa & Will, P.C. Shelley handles all aspects of Wills, Trusts, and Estate matters at the firm, as well as certain litigation. She assists clients with estates, probate, guardianships and conservatorships, businesses, contracts, buy-sell agreements, operating agreements, prenuptial agreements, and litigation. Shelley also represents fiduciaries in assisting with trust and estate litigation and administration. Shelley has served as an expert witness on trusts and estates issues, as well as buy-sell terms. Shelley’s litigation experience includes trusts and estates litigation, as well as complex litigation, including complex securities litigation, business disputes, and bankruptcy adversary litigation.
Shelley teaches Estate Planning at the University of Colorado’s Leeds School of Business. Shelley is a member of the Denver Estate Planning Council, the Trusts and Estate Section of the Colorado Bar Association, the Colorado Women’s Bar Association, and the Women’s Estate Planning Council. Shelley has spoken on a panel with the Exit Planning Institute’s Rocky Mountain Chapter, presented a continuing education course with the Financial Planners Association of Colorado, and spoken at several institutions on the usage of wills versus trusts. Shelley was chosen by SuperLawyers as a 2016 Colorado Rising Star in Estate Planning and Probate, and as a finalist in the Young Professional Award 2009 by the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce. She also received the Client’s Choice Award in 2015 by Avvo Advisor. Shelley has performed a wide variety of other community work and litigation, including pro bono litigation achieving changes to New York law.
Originally from the Denver area, Shelley received her Bachelors of Arts in Political Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder and her Juris Doctor and Masters of Arts in International Affairs with an emphasis in Latin America, from American University in Washington D.C. Shelley is licensed to practice law in Colorado and New York. She is proficient in Spanish.
