Firm Summary
Peter Puciloski is a graduate of Harvard Law School, cum laude, 1975 and Boston College, magna cum laude, 1969 with a major in Philosophy and minors in Chemistry and Mathematics. In Peter’s lengthy practice of law, he has developed specialties in the areas of marijuana and solar permitting, land conservation, affordable housing, and land use litigation, as well as commercial and residential closings.
Peter has been practicing law in the Southern Berkshires since 2003. He moved to the Berkshires to join David and Alex in founding our law firm. Prior to that, Peter lived in Hingham, Massachusetts for more than three decades.
Prior to attending Harvard, Peter enlisted in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of lieutenant as the navigator of the USS Nantahala (AO-60). After law school, Peter joined the Boston litigation firm of Sugarman Rogers Barshak & Cohen, PC, where he served as a Managing Partner and became one of the firm’s senior litigators. Peter then decided to focus his practice on real property law, and in 1999 he joined William Hovey and his firm of Hovey & Koenig LLP as the only partner who practiced litigation. When David and Alex discussed forming the firm in 2003, they invited Peter to join them, and he agreed.
Peter’s clients include individuals and businesses from Berkshire County to Martha’s Vineyard. Peter appears before municipal and state boards and commissions on the Federal, state and local level. Peter’s practice also involves all aspects of real estate and business transactions. Peter has represented numerous land conservation organizations, including the Stockbridge Land Trust, the Sheffield Land Trust and the Alford Land Trust. He handles land conservation, zoning, permitting, land use regulation, trust formation and estate planning, and litigation. Peter has served as an expert witness court on real estate issues. He is also a title agent for Chicago Title Insurance Company and a commissioner of the Land Court.
While Peter’s practice is now focused on transactional work, Peter is a thoughtful and experienced litigator who has successfully represented clients in both jury and bench trials throughout the Commonwealth and in Federal Court. Peter’s numerous reported decisions include: Duddy v. Mankewich, 75 Mass. App. Ct. 62 (2009); Bobick v. United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company, 439 Mass. 652 (2003); Planning Board of Hingham v. Hingham Campus, LLC, 438 Mass. 364 (2003); Chandler v. FMC Corp., 35 Mass. App. Ct. 332 (1993); Manning v. Nobile, 411 Mass. 382 (1991); Sanford v. Vinal, 28 Mass. App. Ct. 476 (1990); Wheatley v. Planning Bd. of Hingham, 10 Mass. App. Ct. 884 (1980); Trustees of Stigmatine Fathers, Inc. v. Secretary of Administration and Finance, 369 Mass. 562 (1976).
Peter is an active and vital member of our community in the Berkshires, and was similarly involved in his prior hometown of Hingham, Massachusetts. Here, Peter is a Board Member of the Alford Land Trust and serves on the Select Board for the Town of Alford. Peter is a Member of the AlfordLink Commission that brought high-speed Internet to Alford when there was no other option. Peter has been recognized many times over for his service and dedication. He has achieved an AV Preeminent ranking from Martindale-Hubbell, a peer-review award, is a past president of the Community Development Corporation of South Berkshire, an affordable-housing organization, and the somewhat tongue-in-cheek award for Most Liberal Lawyer in the Southern Berkshires due to his early and extensive work in the field of cannabis permitting.
In Hingham, Peter was a Member of the Hingham Planning Board, 1980-1993, the Hingham Historic District Commission, 1995-2004, and the Hingham Water Supply Committee, 2002-2004.
Peter is a member of the Real Estate Bar Association, the Boston, and American Bar Associations, the Lawyer-Pilot Bar Association (Massachusetts Chair 1997-2003) and the Defense Research Institute (Chair, Aerospace Committee 1992-1995). A former US Navy Lieutenant, he holds a commercial pilot’s license (Instrument Rating, SEL).
Peter resides in Southern Berkshire County with his family and his dogs, who are regularly at the office.
