Biography:

Paula was raised in Bennington, Vermont. She graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1982 and received her law degree from Vermont Law School in 1995. Prior to attending law school, Paula spent more than five years as legislative staff working in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, mainly focusing on health, human services and labor law.

After graduating from law school, she worked as a Senior Associate in the Health Care Provider Consulting practice at William M. Mercer focusing on Medicare, Medicaid and other government healthcare programs, based in Chicago, IL.

Paula spent four years in private practice in Denver, Colorado, with the national law firm of Kutak Rock as Of Counsel in the Health Law Practice before returning home to Vermont in 2002. Upon returning to Vermont, Paula was the Project Director of the Medicare Advocacy Project at Vermont Legal Aid for 4 years.

Most recently, Paula was Of Counsel with the law firm of Facey Goss & McPhee for 12 years, building an elder law practice as an addition to firm’s already established estate planning and probate litigation practice.

Paula also maintains an estate and trust administration practice in Colorado where she is also licensed.

In addition to her law practice, Paula writes the blog On the Way to Dying, which offers practical advice on aging, dying and after death isues. Paula frequently teaches Continuing Legal Education seminars for lawyers and gives public talks on elder law issues such as how to prevent thefts from elders and estates and how to recover stolen assets. She is the co-author of Living Well On Other People’s Money, published in the Vermont Bar Association Journal in Spring 2012.
