Matthew J. Van Epps is a 1977 graduate of Owosso High School and a 1981 graduate of the University of Michigan. He attended the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary and in 1984 received his Doctor of Jurisprudence in law.
After law school, Matthew returned to Owosso and worked for two years for Van Epps & Van Epps. In 1986, he was appointed Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Shiawassee County where he prosecuted individuals for all types of crimes including controlled substances, criminal sexual conduct, assault, financial crimes and drunk driving. In 1992, Matthew returned to the private sector and resumed his practice with Van Epps & Van Epps.
Matthew strongly believes giving back to the community. He served for six years on the Owosso Board of Education including 4 years as Board President. He is the past president of the Shiawassee Council for Child Abuse Prevention, past president of the Shiawassee County Bar Association, and past president of the Shiawassee-Owosso Kiwanis Club. He is the former Chairman of the Board for Shiawassee Employment and Training. He has served as the chair for legal and financial professionals for the Shiawassee United Way Campaign and as a board member for the Memorial Healthcare Foundation. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce where he serves on the Government Affairs committee.
Matthew is an active member of Christ Episcopal Church where he has served as Senior Warden and continues to sit on the Vestry. He lives in Owosso with his wife, Karen, and their two children, Christian and Madison.
