John was born in Juneau, Alaska, and lived in Colorado, Wyoming, and Virginia, before his father moved John’s family to Montana in 1980 – his dad’s home State. He attended Big Sky High School, in Missoula, Montana, graduating in 1984. John graduated from Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana with a Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1988.

Upon graduating from Montana State University John moved to southern California and worked for Dow Chemical for five years. While working for Dow Chemical he attended night classes in the Business Administration Masters program at Pepperdine University.
He returned to Montana in 1993 to study law at the University of Montana. John received his law degree in 1996. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Montana.

John is married to Molly, and they have a shetland sheepdog (sheltie) named “Bruce,” a Collie name “Duke”, and a cat named “Clyde.”Their interests include golf, skiing, and traveling.
