Firm Summary
Jenny’s time in the office is spent equally between assisting employers with their essential human resource compliance concerns and helping clients with a wide variety of trust and estate matters. “I enjoy getting to know clients so I can provide practical counsel they can apply in their day-to-day lives or business operations. Plus, I’m very curious by nature and I love learning about different organizations, whether workplaces or families, and about different backgrounds and industries.”
Jenny greatly enjoys helping clients create the best outcomes possible, whether it’s creating the best place to work or the best plan for passing on a legacy. Jenny started her legal career in San Francisco at an employment boutique which exclusively represented employers. “During law school, I clerked for USF’s Office of Legal Affairs and got to work very closely with outside counsel on a wide variety of issues. I was particularly drawn to employment law because it’s a very practical area of law and I like that. Personnel decisions impact everyday business for the employer and the day-to-day lives of their employees and I think it’s in everyone’s best interest to create the best employment relationship possible.”
Jenny went to work for one of those outside firms after law school and, 21 years later, she has wide experience counseling employers in all aspects of the employment relationship, with emphasis on preventative and proactive management advice and counsel, hiring and employment best practices, employment documentation, employment separation, independent investigations, and wage and hour matters.
Jenny has also successfully represented clients in civil litigation in employment matters at the state and federal levels and before governmental agencies. “I grew up as an employment lawyer in San Francisco during the tech boom and we were pioneering workplaces that no one had seen before. Because of this, I like to focus on what my clients can do instead of telling them what they can’t.”
On the business transactional side, Jenny has assisted clients with the practical management and growth of their businesses, by negotiating and drafting contracts, negotiating leases, and filing for trademarks and copyrights.
Once she started her own family, Jenny added estate planning to her practice and discovered a passion for helping families avoid future turmoil through effective planning. “My favorite classes in law school were Wills & Trusts, Community Property, and Taxation. It’s no wonder I love estate work because it’s the perfect intersection of those areas, and I get to provide clients confidence and peace of mind. My objective is always to lighten the burden for our clients, and I get to experience that regularly with estate work. It’s very rewarding.”
Nearly 10 years and more than 100 estate plans after drafting her first estate plan, Jenny has also represented clients in probate administration, probate litigation and helped with many unfunded trusts, which has given her a keen understanding of why structured planning matters and the consequences of failed estate plans. Jenny says, “I have seen the fallout when a good estate plan is not in place and it was devastating, not just financially but for the people, including the children, now parentless, who were left behind. I work diligently to make sure the customized plans we create do what our clients want them to do, so they and their loved ones can focus on living.”
Jenny’s new and long-term clients have largely resulted from word-of-mouth referrals and she is known as a responsive, thorough, and thoughtful advisor. “When I agree to represent a client, I take on their burden and I treat it as seriously as if it were my own. My strengths are to carefully review the issues, identify potential pain points, explore available options, and present practical solutions. It’s my personality to take ownership of my work and it’s the personality of the law firm I’m building.”
As a wife for almost 20 years, and mother to three daughters, Jenny strives to be an example of dedication, strong work ethic, integrity, and responsible citizenship. These values inform everything she does, and they inspired her to start JDS Law.
When not assisting clients, Jenny enjoys spending time with her family at lacrosse games, youth symphony concerts, and horse shows, and she has a fondness for hockey (go Sharks!), knitting & crochet, reading historical non-fiction, listening to podcasts on every topic under the sun, live music, and serving as a youth leader at church.
