Firm Summary
Candace Minjares joined our trust and estate team in 2016 after practicing estate planning, business law, and taxation with a boutique firm in downtown Chicago. A Texas native, Candace graduated summa cum laude from Texas A&M University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with an emphasis on International Business.
She moved to Chicago in August 2007 to attend DePaul University College of Law. She sat consecutively for the Illinois and Texas Bar, and she was admitted to both in November 2010 and May 2011, respectively. Yearning for warmer weather and wanting to be closer to family in Southern Pines, Candace applied to the North Carolina bar and was admitted in 2016. She remains active in both Illinois and Texas law.
While in Chicago, Candace specialized in estate and trust administration for multigenerational, high net worth individuals. Her practice has encompassed all areas of individual and family asset planning including drafting and implementation of family entities, public and private charitable entities, charitable lead and remainder trusts, simple to sophisticated wills, insurance trusts, revocable trusts, generation skipping dynasty trusts, gift trusts, and other related strategies aimed at reducing estate tax and generation-skipping transfer taxes, and more recently, adjustments to cost basis of trust property held in irrevocable trusts that were established when we experienced a lower estate tax exemption.
Candace’s experience ranges from planning for the disposition of small estates through planning for management and disposition of complex estates. Candace enjoys both the drafting aspect of her work and also assisting families with ensuring a seamless transition and trust beneficiaries and trustees with the administration of trusts and related matters, such as the interpretation and construction of trust provisions, trusteeship, and trust modifications and terminations.
Candace has already started planting roots in North Carolina, including recently moving her horses to North Carolina to take advantage of the various parks and trails that our area has to offer. She lives near downtown Durham, and when she is not riding, you will find her running the Duke trails in Durham, kiteboarding in the Outer Banks, and enjoying getting to know the triangle area.
Candance is serving as the Board Chair for Caring House.
