Barbara Carlin is the founder of Carlin & Shapiro, P.A., where she practices elder law and estate planning. Ms. Carlin has submitted numerous Medicaid applications for long term care and has worked with litigators throughout the State to ensure that personal injury settlements are structured so they do not unnecessarily jeopardize the public benefit eligibility of disabled clients. Ms. Carlin has been appointed by the Governor to serve on the Probate and Trust Law Advisory Commission, which has been charged with the responsibility of revising the entire Maine Probate Code so that it reflects the provisions of the Uniform Probate Code. She has been rated as a Super lawyer, a rating service of outstanding lawyers who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Ms. Carlin drafted the only two pooled trusts for disabled individuals in the State of Maine. She speaks extensively about elder law, estate planning and disability issues, and she has published articles on planning for incapacity and supplemental needs trusts in the Maine Bar Journal. Ms. Carlin graduated from the University of Maryland, Summa Cum Laude, and from the University of Maryland School of Law, with honors and as a member of the Order of Coif. Following graduation, she served as a law clerk for the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. She is a past co-chair of the Elder Law Section of the Maine State Bar Association; and is a past board member of Legal Services for the Elderly.
