Firm Summary

My areas of practice are based on what I know and enjoy. The knowledge comes from years of experience and continuing legal education. The enjoyment comes from making life a little bit easier for my clients.

I’ve been licensed to practice law in Ohio since 1991. I spent several years as an Assistant Attorney General at the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, and then several years in private practice before opening my own office in 2001. From the beginning, I have endeavored to practice law with integrity and hard work, and to treat people the way I want to be treated. I have a personal, hands-on approach to every client who hires me.

Each person has different legal needs and expectations, and from our initial consultation I try to understand what the client needs so that I can help lead them to the best solution. In my experience, whether it’s been in Workers’ Compensation, handling a Social Security Disability claim, or administering an estate in probate, the best results are achieved through thorough review and preparation with the client. You can be sure that you’ll have an attorney working for you who cares. If you are seeking an experienced and dedicated Workers’ Compensation lawyer, Social Security Disability lawyer, or Estate Planning and Probate lawyer in the Columbus, Ohio area, then contact the Philip Gauer Law office today.

Who is Philip Gauer
Philip J. Gauer is a certified specialist in Workers’ Compensation law through the Ohio State Bar Association. In this area of law, Phil limits his practice to the representation of injured workers before the Industrial Commission of Ohio, and in court whenever necessary. Phil is a former Assistant Attorney General with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. He has been in private practice since 1995, and has had a solo practice since 2001. Maintaining the certification as a specialist in workers’ compensation law requires the completion of extra continuing legal education (CLE) courses in advanced workers’ compensation law every two years, as well as obtaining favorable peer reviews from opposing counsel and hearing officers from the Industrial Commission. Workers’ compensation is an adversarial area of law, but it can be handled with respect for the parties, and professionalism among the representatives.

Phil also practices in the area of Social Security Disability law. It is similar to Workers’ Compensation in that it involves the intersection of law and medicine. Hearings take place at the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review (ODAR), and are heard by Administrative Law Judges (ALJs). Phil has been representing claimants in this area of law since 1995, and he has been a member of NOSSCR (National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives) for many years.

A third area of law that Phil enjoys is Estate Planning and Probate. This involves the preparation of Wills and Trusts, and Phil also represents executors and administrators in the administration of decedents’ estates through probate, as well as guardians in guardianships.

Phil received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Miami University, and his Juris Doctor from the Capital University Law School. As a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, Phil belongs to the Solo, Small Firms and General Practice Section, the Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Section, and the Workers’ Compensation Committee. In the Columbus Bar Association, Phil is a member of the Workers’ Compensation Committee and the Social Security Disability Committee.

Phil is a lifetime resident of Columbus, Ohio, and he and his wife Janet have three daughters.

On a personal note, I married the girl I met in the fourth grade, so when I find something I like, I stick with it! In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, riding and coaching motorcycling as an instructor with Motorcycle Ohio, Karate, and camping.

My Mission
As a lawyer, my goal is to ensure that my clients are treated fairly by what can sometimes be a difficult and bureaucratic legal system. I believe that the outcome of a legal dispute should be based upon the merits of the case, not on the “luck of the draw.” I aspire to the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect. I enjoy representing individuals who wish to take an active role in achieving a fair and equitable resolution of their case.
